Antike (Cicero) wo sich der Begriff als terminus technicus im Bereich der Rhetorik findet und dort die 'Hervorhebung der charakteristischen Merkmale einer Sache' meint. In der Scholastik in Bezug auf die materielle Formung, die Gestaltung der Materie durch die Form, auch in Bezug auf den Intellekt verwendet, tritt der Begriff bei Descartes als die Formung des Geistes durch die in der Wahrnehmung geprägte physische Gehirnstruktur auf.\\ In der neueren Geschichte des Begriffes steht er im wesentlichen in Zusammenhang mit der Nachrichtenübermittlung. Dabei hat der Begriff verschiedene Explikate in den Bereichen der //Theorie der informationsverarbeitenden Systeme//, der //Informationstheorie// und der //logisch-semantischen Informationstheorie// (Barhillel/Carnap) ausgebildet. Information meint hier nicht eine physikalische Gegebenheit, sondern bestimmte Zusammenhänge zwischen solchen Gegebenheiten bzw. den Gehalt oder Inhalt einer Mitteilung. -|Abstract: An assessment is offered of the recent debate on information in the philosophy of biology, and an analysis is provided of the notion of information as applied in scientific practice in molecular genetics. In particular, this paper deals with the dependence of basic generalizations of molecular biology, above all the ‘central dogma’, on the so-called ‘informational talk’ (Maynard Smith [2000a]). It is argued that talk of information in the ‘central dogma’ can be reduced to causal claims. In that respect, the primary aim of the paper is to consider a solution to the major difficulty of the causal interpretation of genetic information: how to distinguish the privileged causal role assigned to nucleic acids, DNA in particular, in the processes of replication and protein production. A close reading is proposed of Francis H. C.
